Straw Lodge Estate is located on Barrow's organic vineyard in the heart of Marlborough's Wairau Valley wine region. Here the soils of the Wairau River terraces, Marlborough's long dry summers, cool nights and careful vineyard management create the ideal conditions for the production of quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. Organic practices, low yields and hand harvesting combine to produce fruit and wine that retain the vibrant varietal flavours that make New Zealand wines so distinctive. With no pesticides or herbicides being used on the property, and minimal interference in the natural growing processes, the vines are left to produce fruit that is a true and wonderful reflection of the place. Guests have the opportunity to taste and purchase Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wine from the fruit of the vineyard.
Having spent ten years producing quality grapes for just one top rated winery 'Churton' it was decided the time had come to produce the estate's own wine label. 2010 will see the beginning of the new label 'Worlds End Wines' with the release of the first 'Worlds End Sauvignon Blanc'. The naming of the label has grown from a number of influences. It has been shaped by the importance of a 'sense of place', of people and of environment; also by our guests' expressions of delight at feeling they have come as far from the clutter, pollution and excesses of the Northern Hemisphere as could be possible, to the end of the world; and to a very special place in our heart, 'Worlds End', Tennyson Inlet, a pristine natural environment in the Marlborough Sounds where we have our bach. We believe the quality, purity and vibrancy of the wine will be a worthy reflection of these sentiments.
Guests are welcome to wander through the vineyard and your hosts are happy to explain the workings of the vineyard year. Guests also have the opportunity to taste the vineyard's wine during a complimentary tasting of the wine enjoyed with a platter during their stay. The wine is also available for purchase. Being a working vineyard there are times of the year when machinery working, bird scaring and frost control measures may be audible. Please enquire if this could be a problem to you.
